Superheating field of superconductors within Ginzburg-Landau theory

چکیده
We study the superheating field of a bulk superconductor within Ginzburg-Landau theory, which is valid near the critical temperature. We calculate, as functions of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ , the superheating field Hsh and the critical momentum kc characterizing the wavelength of the instability of the Meissner state to flux penetration. By mapping the two-dimensional linear stability theory into a one-dimensional eigenfunction problem for an ordinary differential equation, we solve the problem numerically. We demonstrate agreement between the numerics and analytics, and show convergence to the known results at both small and large κ . We discuss the implications of the results for superconducting rf cavities used in particle accelerators.

Ginzburg-Landau theory of the superheating field anisotropy of layered superconductors
We investigate the effects of material anisotropy on the superheating field of layered superconductors. We provide an intuitive argument both for the existence of a superheating field, and its dependence on anisotropy, for κ = λ/ξ (the ratio of magnetic to superconducting healing lengths) both large and small. On the one hand, the combination of our estimates with published results using a two-...
متن کاملTemperature dependence of the superheating field for superconductors in the high- London limit
We study the metastability of the superheated Meissner state in type II superconductors with 1 beyond Ginzburg-Landau theory, which is applicable only in the vicinity of the critical temperature. Within Eilenberger’s semiclassical approximation, we use the local electrodynamic response of the superconductor to derive a generalized thermodynamic potential valid at any temperature. The stability ...
متن کاملStatistical Physics (PHY831): Part 4: Ginzburg-Landau theory, modeling of dynamics and scaling in complex systems
London theory was developed by Fritz London in 1935 to describe the Meissner effect. This theory leads to the introduction of the penetration depth to describe the extent of magnetic field penetration, λ into type I superconductors. The penetration depth is also important in type II superconductors and describes the extent of flux penetration near vortices as well as at surfaces. Prior to his s...
متن کاملThe Vortex Lattice in Ginzburg-Landau Superconductors
Abrikosov’s solution of the linearized Ginzburg-Landau theory describing a periodic lattice of vortex lines in type-II superconductors at large inductions, is generalized to non-periodic vortex arrangements, e.g., to lattices with a vacancy surrounded by relaxing vortices and to periodically distorted lattices that are needed in the nonlocal theory of elasticity of the vortex lattice. Generaliz...
متن کاملhigh-Tc superconductors from isothermal magnetization data. Influence of a temperature dependent Ginzburg-Landau parameter
We show that the scaling procedure, recently proposed for the evaluation of the temperature variation of the normalized upper critical field of type-II superconductors, may easily be modified in order to take into account a possible temperature dependence of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ. As an example we consider κ(T ) as it follows from the microscopic theory of superconductivity.
